Steel Lounger

Break the norm.

The Steel Lounger is not just a chair, it is an experience. This chair was made with a twist, meant to be a playful take on furniture. With the perceived sturdiness of the steel, you are met with the ability to relax and recline.

Design Elements

Premium cow leather and cold rolled steel with exposed TIG welds

“Floating” seat element created with using the strength of the steel to suspend you

Depending on the weight of the person the seat bends and conforms to your body as you sit.

Process.

This project was a form study, chair study and quite honestly a study of playfulness. I had recently taken a welding class at a local welding school which gave me the love and appreciation for TIG welding. Having always loved working with metal and leather, I felt it was only right to combine both mediums in this project. Long story short I acquired my own TIG welding equipment so the sky was the limit!

Beginning Directions

I started this project with a very sculptural direction as you can see, but I never fully liked where it was going. I then pivoted to a more functional approach, but still trying to incorporate that playful aspect with having the form move and bounce with weight. From sketching to cardboard to welding, this was a very fulfilling project. The pictures should tell the story well enough, but this one was a lot of work and only furthered my love for these materials.

Enjoy!
